Station 29 Kornnatter

Kommt ruhig näher. Keine Angst.

My kukuřiční hadi jsme docela dobří lezci a rádi se vydáváme do korun stromů. Náš jazyk nám pomáhá cítit a lokalizovat kořist. A taky 2 týdny před línáním nic nejíme.

Station 29 Corn Snake

Come closer. No fear. I can bite if I feel threatened, but I'm not poisonous. 'Cause I'm a constrictor. But you humans are much too big for me, so you don't need to be afraid of me. I much prefer chasing small mice or rats, small lizards and sometimes birds and their eggs. We corn snakes are quite good climbers and like to venture up into the treetops. But our range in the eastern United States is so large that we not only live in deciduous and coniferous forests, but also crawl through scrub and grasslands or feel comfortable in wetlands. We also like to be close to people, where we meander through the cornfields and granaries to chase the many mice that fill their bellies there. We prefer to hunt at dusk or at night. Our tongue helps us smell and locate prey. We can eat up to 18% of our body weight! And when we're stuffed like that, we don't need anything else for a few days or a week. In winter we go into hibernation together with many other corn snakes, then we don't eat anything for 4 months. And also 2 weeks before molting we don't eat anything. That's right. We can shed our entire skin. We grow throughout our lives and when our skin gets too tight, we simply slough it off in narrow crevices or forks in branches. Incidentally, our species has many different color variations, which is why we are also very popular pets with humans. Our underside is particularly pretty, with the striking checkerboard pattern that is so typical of us corn snakes. In addition, we are quite peaceful and easy to care for. And with mostly only 1.50m length, we are not that long. Do you see? We're harmless. Honest.
